El 14 de Junio de 2009, Pettyfer fue votado en el #1 del top 50 de los solteros más codiciados del Reino Unido en la revista femenina Company.²⁰ En Agosto de 2009 la revista británica Glamour lo ubicó en puesto #21 de su lista de los hombres más sexies del planeta, según una encuesta hecha a 2.000 mujeres en el Reino Unido.²¹

Después que Pettyfer terminó de filmar Stormbreaker, él no comentó nada acerca del film en su escuela, por un consejo que le dió su co-protagonista del mismo film, Ewan McGregor, quien le dijo que él debía mantener sus vidas personal y profesional separadas. Pettyfer decidió dejar la escuela para así poder concentrarse en su carrera cinematográfica,²² mientras está estudiando drama en el universidad,⁷ afirmando que "Cuando tienes saliendo y tradando en el mundo real, y vuelves a la escuela, tú solo lo ves como jardín infantil y no quieres estar más ahí".²³

Tuvo una relación con Emma Roberts, con la que co-protagonizo la película Wildchild, a raíz de eso, se tatuó las iniciales de su nombre "ER". Después de grabar Soy el Numero Cuatro empezó a salir con la actriz Dianna Agron (Glee). Aunque la relación no fue confirmada, salieron muchas fotos de ellos saliendo y besándose. La relación termino en enero de 2011

Pettyfer tiene siete tatuajes, entre ellas una cruz celta en su pecho, una escritura Tibetana en su antebrazo derecho, las palabras "What Goes Around Comes Around" en su hombro derecho, las iniciales ER (Emma Roberts) y una escritura Katakana en su cintura.24

After Pettyfer completed filming Stormbreaker, he did not say anything about the film at his school, for advice that he gave his co-star of that film, Ewan McGregor, who told him that he should keep his personal and professional lives separate. Pettyfer decided to leave school in order to concentrate on his film career, 22 while studying drama in college, 7 stating that "When you're out and tradando in the real world, and go back to school, you see yourself as kindergarten and do not want there to be more ".23

Had a relationship with Emma Roberts, with whom he co-starred in the film Wildchild, following that, he tattooed the initials of his name "ER." After recording the Number Four I began dating actress Dianna Agron (Glee). Although the relationship was not confirmed, many pictures of them came out and kissing. The relationship ended in January 2011
